The Giants announced today that they will host a 20 year anniversary reunion of the 1989 World Series team during an interleague home stand against the Oakland A's on June 13. A large majority of the original team members are scheduled to appear including Robby Thomas, Will Clark , Matt Williams, Kevin Mitchell, and Jeff Brantley just to name a few. For all those not quite up to speed, not old enough to remember, not from the area or have been living under a rock for the past 20 years let me refresh your memory... the 1989 World Series between the Giants and the A's was interrupted by the famous Loma Prieta earthquake on Tuesday, October 17th. Now, for those of us who lived through the earthquake, after shocks and chaos that surrounded that horrible day, we will never forget where we were and what we were doing.
I had just sat down to watch the game with my dad, when my mom called. I got up to answer the phone and only moments later the solid, secure, stable ground beneath me was no longer still. I remember looking at the TV and seeing a split second of Candlestick Park rattling back-and-forth as if it were a small toy, before the cable connection was lost. That day, and the subsequent days that followed are still crystal clear in my mind. It's hard to believe that was almost 20 years ago.
Where were you?
I would not be surprised if the Giants made contract offers to Matt Williams, Kevin Mitchell, Will the Thrill, or Robby Thompson. There is no doubt we wont be returning to those glory days for awhile.
